Web2.0 Learning Opportunity Part 3

The Workshop on Web2.0 has successfully taken off in Accra Ghana with more than twenty participants. The resource person Dr. Justin Chisenga is one of the most competent instructors I have ever had the privilege of meeting.
The workshop began with self introduction of participants after which the resource person, Dr. Chisenga gave an overview of the various Web 2.0 tools and their capabilities by way of general introduction. The instructor talked about social networking tools, (e.g. Twitter, Face book, LinkedIn, Social bookmarks, Wikis, blogs, Feeds etc.).   We were first taken through the prerequisites of creating a social media account involving asking yourself a few fundamental questions such as why do I need a social?  Who are my audience, what do I want to tell them, how are my going to tell them, what content am I going to create,  which social media site should I use, which tools am I going to use, and how am I going to measure the impact among others.  Issues pertaining to privacy and security, reliability of content, and investment and time management, as well as access and connectivity and low bandwidth were discussed.
After the general introduction, the first lesson focused on micro-blogging with Twitter, which we learnt is a social network platform that allows users to write short messages on specific topics of interest of up to 140 characters, called tweets that can be read by anyone with access to the page.   The goal is to create a community of followers.     The practical session was devoted to creating twitter accounts, and posting a few tweets, as well as following individuals and organizations on twitter.
The morning of day two, we revised what we learnt the previous day and completed the lessons on twitter.  This was then followed by lessons on blogging.  The resource person described a blog as a web site that is periodically updated with articles called posts.  Using blogger as a platform, each participant created his/her own blog and published a few posts on the blog.
During the third day of the workshop participants continued with practical blogging.

My general impression about the workshop is that so far so good, and I am really excited and enthusiastic about the subsequent lessons.
